Sundowns Close to Breaking Record After 2-0 Win
Mamelodi Sundowns are on the path to breaking another record following a 2-0 victory over Royal AM on Tuesday night, 14 May.
Taking on Thwihli Thwahla at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, the reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions asserted their dominance by maintaining a strong possession (72%) of the ball throughout the game.
After the first 41 minutes of play, the Brazilians broke the goalless deadlock: striker Peter Shalulile executed a perfect bicycle kick to net his team’s first goal of the evening.
In the second half, Sundowns continued to press forward, exerting pressure on Royal AM’s defence as the minutes ticked by.
This led to the visitors extending their lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute, when right winger Lesiba Nku found the back of the net with a sleek yet powerful shot.
As a result, Mamelodi Sundowns remain at the top of the PSL table with 69 points, while Royal AM sit in 14th place with 29 points.
What’s more, the champions are three points away from breaking Pitso Mosimane’s record of 71 points in a single PSL season, which he achieved with Sundowns in the 2015/16 season.
